HSTA RECOMMENDS DAVID IGE FOR GOVERNOR

Aloha Colleague,

Many teachers may not realize that elected officials formulate the majority of public policies that affect teachers’ needs and student learning in their classrooms.

This morning, teachers from around the state will gather with me to announce HSTA’s recommendation of David Ige for Governor of the State of Hawaii.

While a member of the Hawaii State Legislature, David Ige has always been a strong supporter of public education and public school teachers, and he has demonstrated an ongoing commitment to improving Hawaii’s educational system in ways that support student learning and the development of the teaching profession in our state.

David Ige has led the charge to allocate funds that go directly to schools and the classroom. In addition, he has introduced and helped pass legislation that provided millions of dollars in funding for school capital improvement projects, and has encouraged innovation at the school and classroom level.  David Ige is the type of leader our community needs to lead our school system into the future, and HSTA is proud to recommend him for Governor.

~ We feel that David is dedicated to making the right decisions for our schools,
                our students, and our communities.

The decision to recommend Senator Ige was made at the Board of Directors’ meeting yesterday by members representing teachers in every school district around the state based on the honesty, integrity, and commitment demonstrated by his record, written answers to our questionnaire, and in a face-to-face interview with HSTA members.

Being involved in politics is just part of our collective action. We strive to build relationships by engaging and working with everyone in our communities who has a stake in our public schools. This is the only way we can ensure that our members and our students have the supports and resources needed to be successful.

If we care about the students we teach, if we want to make a difference in their lives, if we want to advocate for what we believe in, we need to go where the decision-makers are.

Throughout the election season, there may be times that we ask you to help.  Please watch for different ways that you can contribute.  Most of all be sure to cast your vote for the candidates who support education.

Mahalo,
Wil Okabe
President
