Have you reviewed the DOE Example Timetable and Implementation Strategies for this month?
(Hawaii Educator Effectiveness System / DOE Manual for Evaluators and Participants, Pages 6-7)
AUGUST 2013
State of Hawaii Department of Education EDUCATOR EFFECTIVENESS SYSTEM - Manual for Evaluators and Participants
Did your school distribute copies of the manual by the first day of instruction?
HSTA leadership and staff are reviewing the EES Manual, now available online at http://eesteacher.weebly.com/ees-manual.html . We thank HSTA’s members of the EES Joint Committee for their hard work and advocacy efforts this summer. Though consensus and agreement was not reached in all areas, we thank the Department and BOE for honoring and respecting the process agreed to in the contract. We look forward to gathering additional feedback from teachers and to the work still to be done by the EES Joint Committee to make ongoing recommendations for improvement over the course of the school year. Please contact the EES SUPPORT TEAM
Data collection is critical to the year-long process. Therefore, it is important that teachers give input to the State.
Phone Number: 808-586-4072
Hours of Operation: 7:30 A.M. - 3:30 P.M.
Days: Monday-Friday, except state and federal holidays, Teacher DLWOP days, and the winter break period.
HSTA is also collecting data
Because of your input during statewide listening tours and your support of the teachers on your Negotiations Team, HSTA was able to obtain the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) that is part of your new contract. This MOU establishes a Joint Committee of the Employer and teachers and it brings the teacher voice to the table for discussion to validate our concerns on the topic of teacher evaluation and the new system.
In order to make changes to the current system, we must work together to gather data from you. It will be a year-round process. This means:
1. Members need to actively participate in the EES and share their experiences. There will be multiple opportunities throughout the year, either at your schools, through monthly chapter meetings, or member surveys to give your input.
-Starting the week of August 12, 2013, your faculty representative will begin polling members in your building.
-The first HSTA member survey is scheduled around Labor Day. Please watch for more information.
2. HSTA created an all-teacher Advisory Committee to help review member feedback, analyze the issues from a teacher perspective, and to discuss recommendations with HSTA representatives on the Joint Committee.
We genuinely want an evaluation system that enhances the practice of teaching and improves student learning. Our participation in creation of a new teacher evaluation system is an example of HSTA’s leadership role in transforming education.
Please continue to watch for more information at your schools, in your chapters, or at the state level through member e-mail messages, Web site postings, the Teacher Advocate newsletter or other printed materials.
If at any time you feel that your rights are being violated, please contact your UniServ Director. UniServ Directors (login required) are HSTA representatives assigned to each school. These representatives are also referred to as UDs. A complete list of UD assignments by school complex is posted on your member Web site, login required.
